Athens – Gay Guide

Athens, a gay destination not to be missed

The capital of Greece and its gay district of Gazi.

Athens, undoubtedly the most famous Greek city in the world (along with the city of Sparta), stands out, not only for its historical appeal but also for its vibrant gay life. Like all large metropolises, a gay neighbourhood has emerged in a district once known for its working-class activity. Founded around 800 B.C., Athens quickly became a dominant city in military and cultural terms. Ancient Greeks, and Athenians in particular, are known for their open-mindedness on issues of homosexuality. Cultural places to visit are legion: the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum, the Olympion, the Agora, the ancient temple of Athena and many others. Come and immerse yourself in Greek culture!

Athens is the capital of Greece and also the largest city in the country. It has a population of approximately 665,000 and rises to over 4 million including the metropolitan area. It is the centre of Greek power with the presence of the parliament and the seat of government. His gay life is mainly located in the gazi district, not far from the Acropolis. The district is a former industrial area dominated by a gas plant, hence the name gazi. In recent years, the district has become increasingly interesting as a cultural centre and is now particularly trendy. It is also home to most of the city’s gay establishments and the nights are very lively.

Athens is a large city with a fairly cosmopolitan population and welcomes many tourists. So, you’re safe there and generally speaking, the population is quite tolerant towards LGBTQ+ people and has been evolving more and more positively in recent years.

Greece has established civil unions for same-sex couples since 2015. A gay marriage proclaimed abroad has been recognized since 2018 and is being legalized in parliament. Adoption is possible for only one member of the couple. Discrimination on gender identity is strictly prohibited and gender reassignment has been legalized since 2017. Efforts still need to be made but Greece stands out as a good student of LGBTQ+ rights.

The currency is the Euro.

For citizens of the European Union, Switzerland or a member country of the European Economic Area, a national identity card or passport is sufficient, as Greece is a member of the Schengen Area.

For travellers from Canada, the United States and Australia, there is an agreement with the EU that allows you to be exempt from visa requirements for stays of less than 90 days. However, please note that current 2022, you will have to get your ETIAS before any departure. This is an electronic travel authorisation that must be done online before the trip, which will cost €7 and will give access to the Schengen area. Here is the link for more information: ETIAS.
