Party world capital with its international DJ shows, the island of Ibiza attracts a significant number of LGBTQ+ tourists. It is a Spanish island in the Balearic archipelago, located about 80 kilometres off the mainland. Once isolated, the island has become the temple of clubbers from all over the world in the last ten years. His establishments such as Amnesia, the Pasha or Privilege, are known all over the world. Very calm and relaxing during the day. When night falls, partygoers meet in bars and clubs until the early hours of the morning. It’s a great gay destination for a group trip.
Ibiza is one of the 4 inhabited islands of the Balearic archipelago. Initially composed of 130,000 inhabitants, Ibiza’s population explodes during summer. The main city is also called Ibiza and is the most festive place on the island. It’s an ultra gay-friendly destination and we can feel this openness everywhere. Gay travelers are mostly found in the city along the “B” road.Calle de la Mare de Déu – also known as “Calle de la Virgen” where most LGBTQ+ establishments are located. On the other side of the island, in Sant Antoni, you can also find the famous gay hotels. Axel Beach Ibiza and The Purple Hotel by Ibiza.
Commercial counter of the Mediterranean for many centuries, the island developed touristically in the 1960s with the hippie movement. Open-mindedness, tolerance and sexual liberation are advocated. It was then that Ibiza began to forge its own identity as a cosmopolitan and tolerant party destination. Today, it is one of the favourite destinations for clubbers, and the gay clientele very quickly found its place there.
Ibiza is no exception and there is the same tolerance towards LGBTQ+ people as everywhere else in Spain. Same-sex marriage has been allowed since 2005, making it one of the first countries in the world to give equal rights to same-sex couples.
The currency in Ibiza is the Euro. For citizens of the European Union, Switzerland or a member country of the European Economic Area, a national identity card or passport is sufficient, as Spain is a member of the Schengen Area.
For travellers coming from Canada, USA or Australia, there is an agreement with the EU allowing you to be exempted from visa requirements for stays not exceeding 90 days. However, please note that during 2022, you will have to obtain your ETIAS before your departure. This is an electronic travel authorisation that must be done online before the trip, which will cost €7 and will give access to the Schengen area. Here is the link for more information: ETIAS.
