Madrid is the largest city in Spain and its gay district is called “Chueca”, named after the famous Spanish composer Federico Chueca. As the capital of Spain, Madrid has many national but also international political institutions such as the UN World Tourism Organization. A city with neo-classical architecture, you will find many historical monuments to visit such as the Plaza de Cibeles, the Almudena Cathedral or the Prado museum. A Latin city that likes to party, you will have the opportunity to have fun in one of the many gay bars and clubs of the city.
With its metropolitan area, the Spanish capital has about 6.5 million inhabitants. This makes it the 3rd largest urban area in Europe after Paris and London. In 2017, Madrid hosted both EuroPride and WorldPride at the same time, making it Europe’s leading gay pride event in terms of participants (3.5 million). The gay neighbourhood of “Chueca” is located in the heart of the city center. You will find an impressive number of gay establishments (bars, clubs, saunas, restaurants, etc.). Madrid is also known for being a great cultural center with numerous exhibitions of artists.
Like the Spanish city of Barcelona, Madrid benefits from 100% of the advances in LGBTQ+ rights that Spain has made for many years. The gaypride is celebrated in Madrid since 1978. Community organizations and associations keep the Chueca neighborhood alive. Chueca became the centre of gay life and attracts, every year, many members of the LGBTQ+ community who come from Europe or all over the world to party. Internationally renowned parties are held there at all times.
Spain was one of the very first countries in the world, along with the Netherlands and Belgium, to legalize same-sex marriage. In July 2005, the government of President José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero formalized an amendment to the Civil Code which, at the same time, gave the right to adoption by same-sex couples. Blood donation is also allowed for gays, as is gender change, and has been for many years.
Madrid’s gay district is bordered by Gran Via as well as Calle Fuencarral and Calle del Barquillo streets. In Spanish “street” is called “calle”, so it’s a word you will see a lot in addresses. To get there by subway, simply stop at the “Chueca” stop, which takes you directly into the middle of the gay neighbourhood on La Plaza de Chueca.
The Euro is the currency used in Spain. For citizens of the European Union, Switzerland or a member country of the European Economic Area, a national identity card or passport is sufficient, as Spain is a member of the Schengen Area.
For travellers coming from Canada but also from the USA, Australia, etc. there is an agreement with the EU and you are exempt from visa requirements for stays not exceeding 90 days. However, please note that during 2022, you will have to obtain your ETIAS before your departure. This is an electronic travel authorisation that must be done online before the trip, which will cost €7 and will give access to the Schengen area. Here is the link for more information: ETIAS.
