Sitges – Gay Guide

A trendy LGBTQ+ destination, south of Barcelona

Sitges is a trendy gay seaside resort where you can mix fiesta and history.

Often a cheerful stopover destination during a stay in Barcelona, Sitges is a small town full of charm, frequented by a high profile clientele. Accessible by car or public transport from Barcelona, the city has plenty of surprises in store for you. As a major artistic and cultural centre, you can visit monuments dating back several centuries, such as the church of Saint Bartholomew and Sainte Tècle de Sitges, or take a tour to the Cau Ferrat Museum. Sitges is a bit like the Ibiza of the continent, with very festive evenings during the Gay Pride, Bears Weeks or the Sitges Carnival.

Sitges is a small town of 28,000 inhabitants but its population explodes during the summer periods from June to September. It is very well known by Spanish and Europeans for its LGBTQ+ events such as the Gay Pride with its beach parties and its colourful parade along the seaside, its Bears weeks and the famous Sitges Carnival. The city is mainly frequented by LGBTQ+ tourists. The liveliest place is in the city centre, around Plaça de la Indústria and within the area of Bonaire and Joan Tarrida streets. As a chic seaside resort, prices here are higher than elsewhere on the Costa Daurada.

A city rich in history, it began to attract more and more tourists in the 1960s. Sitges quickly became the continental competitor of the island of Ibiza. As an arts centre, it had already been known to the gay community for a long time, but with this development, it became a main town of the LGBTQ+ life. When Spain began to develop strongly among European travellers, Sitges then became a gay destination in its own right and known worldwide.

Impossible not to feel good in Sitges. LGBTQ+ customers are the majority there and Spain is one of the countries in the world offering the best rights and protections for homosexuals for many years. Same-sex marriage has been legal there since 2005, at the same time as Canada.

The currency of Spain is the Euro. For citizens of the European Union, Switzerland or a member country of the European Economic Area, a national identity card or passport is sufficient, as Spain is a member of the Schengen Area.

For travellers coming from Canada but also from the USA, Australia, etc. there is an agreement with the EU and you are exempt from visa requirements for stays not exceeding 90 days. However, please note that during 2022, you will have to obtain your ETIAS before your departure. This is an electronic travel authorisation that must be done online before the trip, which will cost €7 and will give access to the Schengen area. Here is the link for more information: ETIAS.
