Located on the west coast of Mexico, in the state of Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta is a very popular destination for gays. The destination became famous in 1964, with Elizabeth Taylor’s popular movie The Night of the Iguana. With the government’s desire to develop tourism in this part of Mexico and the addition of an international airport, the city has quickly become a major gay destination over the past decade. The old town, the Zona Romántica, bordered by Los Muertos beach, is home to the gay quarter, which continues to grow today.
Puerto Vallarta is a small city of about 220,000 inhabitants. It’s currently one of the safest tourist spots in the country. Located on the Pacific Ocean, it is a 5 hour drive (330km) to the city of Guadalajara, the state capital and second largest city in Mexico. It’s been a haven for gay tourists for a few years now. All the LGBTQ+ activity takes place in the Zona Romántica, a district of the old city. Right across the street is the gay beach of Los Muertos.
If you compare Puerto Vallarta with other gay hotspot destinations on the planet, its appeal to LGBTQ+ clientele is fairly recent. Indeed, the tourist development is quite new (about ten years) and follows the strong will of the Mexican government to have its Palm Springs, if we compare with Los Angeles. Mexico being a very tolerant country, it was natural to see the rise of this gay destination, very popular with Mexicans and Americans. You will find many Canadian tourists between November and April, looking to escape the long, harsh winters in the northern part of the continent.
Mexico is a rather advanced country in terms of LGBTQ+ rights. It’s a federal state, and the states have their own independence. Since 2016, same-sex marriage has been legalized in the state of Jalisco, home of Puerto Vallarta. Mexico City had made it legal since 2009. In 2019, the government submitted an amendment to legalise same-sex marriage throughout Mexico. To date, 20 out of 32 states have officially legalized it. Discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, whether in a private or professional setting, is punished.
The currency is the Mexican peso. Be careful, the Mexican peso is displayed with the $ logo, not to be confused with the American or Canadian dollar. For Canadians, 10CAD will give you about 150 Mexican pesos. For Europeans, 10EUR will give you about 230 Mexican peso.
We advice you to bring some cash to pay in bars, clubs, etc. Keep your payment card in your room’s safe.
A valid passport is required to travel to Mexico. If you are European or Canadian, no visa is required for a tourist trip (maximum 6 months). During your flight, the flight attendants will give you a tourist card to fill out. This card must be presented upon arrival at the Mexican customs.
